| The archipelago of Los Roques is located approximately 160 Km. nearest the north mainland port of the capital city (Caracas -Venezuela), it Consists of more than 50 islands, 200 banks of sand and numerous coralline reefs, and it is the only in their gender in Venezuela. The islands that conform the archipelago, are located among 11º 48 ' and 11º 58 ' North latitude and 66º 32 ' and 66º52 ' of longitude west; and they surround an interior lagoon in an oval way that has from one to five meters deep. In west-east directions the archipelago has an extension of 36 Km, north-south direction has 24.6 Km. The archipelago of Los Roques harbors all the typical ecosystems of the tropical marine and coastal areas, beaches of sand, coralline formations, lagoons of salted and brackish water, prairies of marine grasses, swamps and in the main island, The Great Roque, rocky cliffs. |
