Location:
The archipelago of Los Roques is located approximately 170 north of La Guaira, the mainland harbor closest to the city of Caracas (Venezuela). More than 50 isles, called "cayos", form this archipelago, along with 300 sand banks and several coral reefs, being the only in its kind in the country. The islands that conform this chain are located 11º48'-11º58' north latitude and 66º32'-66º52' west longitude, in the middle of the formation there is an oval-shaped lagoon, surrounded by all the islands, with a depth of 1 to 5mts.

Area:
The archipelago is part of the National Park of Los Roques, which stretches up to 2,252 square kms. The main island, The Great Roque, covers 36 kms. Wide by 24.6 kms. long.

Language:
Venezuela's official language is Spanish. However, English, German and French are widely spoken, specially among tourism-specialized personnel.

Airlines:
Air Transportation is the most convenient way to travel between Caracas and Margarita to Los Roques. We suggest for your convenience LTA Airlines (Línea Turística Aereotuy) - Flight Duration: a) From Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar, Caracas: 30 minutes. B) From Aeropuerto Internacional Santiago Mariño, Margarita Island: 50 minutes. - Type of Planes: a) Caravane - 12 seats. b) Dornier - 18 seats. c) Dash - 40 seats. Population: Including fishermen, workers and inhabitants of the region, in Los Roques there is an average of 1,000 people altogether.

Transportation:
LTA provides transportation between the Great Roque and the other principal cayos, scheduled every day with several departure and arrival times. To hop among islands you can rent a "peñero" (typical fishing motor boat). Peñeros are sailed by local fishermen, who charge a small fee. You can do some planning in advance and set a drop-off and pick-up time, agreeing with the pilot of your peñero, if you want to visit a specific cayo, for example. Once inside the cayos, you don´t really need any other mean of transportation.

Documents Needed:
To enter Venezuela you must have a valid passport and plane ticket. In Los Roques you must also carry your ID, since you will need it to make payments (with credit cards, mostly).
